Overview

The PlayStation 5 Slim, released in November 2023, is Sony's mid-cycle refresh of the PS5 platform. It's not a new console generation — there's zero performance uplift over the 2020 launch unit — but it consolidates the hardware lineup, retires the original chassis, and bumps the internal SSD from 825GB to 1TB. At $449 for Digital Edition and $499 with disc drive, the Slim is now the default PS5 SKU at retail.

Design & build

The Slim shrinks the original PS5's silhouette by roughly 30% in volume and drops 18-24% of the weight depending on configuration. The two-tone white shell is now split into four detachable plates that come off cleanly for cleaning or third-party color swap covers. The disc drive is modular: Digital Edition owners can add it later as a $79.99 accessory, which is the first time Sony has shipped a console upgrade path of this kind.

Build quality is improved in small but noticeable ways — the plates fit more flush, the stand is now a low-profile horizontal disc instead of the awkward two-piece vertical foot, and the fan profile is slightly quieter under load thanks to a redesigned heatsink. The footprint still requires a deeper-than-average shelf, but it finally fits into most standard AV cabinets.

Performance

This is where the Slim is most easily summarized: nothing has changed. The custom AMD Zen 2 8-core CPU runs at the same 3.5 GHz, the RDNA 2 GPU pushes the same 10.28 TFLOPs at 2.23 GHz, you get the same 16GB of GDDR6, and ray tracing performance is identical. Every game from Demon's Souls through Stellar Blade runs at exactly the same resolution, frame rate, and visual fidelity as it did on the original PS5.

The 1TB SSD is the only spec change — and even there, the bandwidth and load times are unchanged. You just get more room: roughly enough for four to five modern AAA titles (Call of Duty alone now demands 200GB+).

Software & ecosystem

PS5 Slim runs the same system software as every other PS5, with the same VRR support, the same 120Hz output, the same PSVR 2 compatibility, and the same DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers. PlayStation Plus tiers are unchanged (Essential, Extra, Premium), and the cloud streaming tier finally added 4K support in 2025. PS4 backward compatibility covers 99% of the previous-gen library.

The exclusives lineup is the platform's strongest argument: God of War Ragnarök, Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy XVI and Rebirth, Returnal, Demon's Souls, Astro Bot, and Stellar Blade are PS5-exclusive or timed-exclusive. Xbox's first-party output has narrowed the gap recently, but Sony still has the deepest single-player catalogue this generation.

Value & verdict

At $449 Digital or $499 with disc, the Slim is the right PS5 for almost every buyer in 2026. The PS5 Pro at $699 makes sense only for 4K-120fps enthusiasts with OLED TVs who want PSSR upscaling and enhanced ray tracing — for everyone else, the Slim delivers the same library, the same DualSense experience, and the same exclusives at $250 less.
