Dolby Vision is an advanced HDR format using dynamic metadata to optimize brightness, contrast, and color on a per-scene basis. Superior to static HDR10 but requires compatible hardware.
Dolby Vision technical specs: 12-bit color depth (4096 levels per channel vs HDR10's 10-bit), dynamic metadata per frame (vs static per-title HDR10), supports up to 4000 nits peak brightness in mastering (cinema).
How it works: content creator (cinematographer, colorist) masters Dolby Vision with tone-mapping instructions for every frame. The metadata tells compatible displays exactly how bright/dark/saturated to render each scene. On non-Dolby displays, metadata is ignored; the file falls back to static HDR10.
Devices supporting Dolby Vision playback: iPhone 14 Pro+, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, LG OLED TVs, Apple TV 4K, select Xiaomi flagships. Notably absent: most laptops, Android tablets, game consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X do not support it).
Content availability: Apple TV+ (most original series), Netflix (increasing library), Disney+, Amazon Prime Video (select), and Blu-ray discs (UHD Blu-ray).
Downside: Dolby Vision licensing fees, encoding complexity, and narrow device support limit adoption vs HDR10. Cost to filmmakers is 2–3× higher than HDR10.
For typical viewing: HDR10 on a good OLED TV looks nearly as good as Dolby Vision. Dolby Vision shines on absolute flagships (iPhone 15 Pro Max, Samsung S24 Ultra displays) where the extra metadata precision is visible.
