Sony WH-1000XM5 vs WH-1000XM4: Is the Upgrade Actually Worth It?
We compared the WH-1000XM5 and WH-1000XM4 spec-by-spec using real data. The answer might surprise you.
Sony WH-1000XM5 vs WH-1000XM4: Is the Upgrade Actually Worth It?
If you own a WH-1000XM4 and are eyeing the XM5, or you are choosing between them right now, this comparison will save you money or help you spend it wisely. We tested both headphones across the same criteria using our 41-dimension scoring framework. Here is what the numbers actually show.
The Short Answer
The WH-1000XM5 is a better headphone by a small margin — lighter, with improved ANC microphones and a cleaner design. But the WH-1000XM4 costs significantly less and loses almost nothing in everyday listening performance. If you already own the XM4, upgrading is hard to justify. If you are buying new and can find the XM5 under $160, go for it.

Sound Quality: Smaller Driver, Same Result
Sony downsized the driver from 40mm to 30mm in the XM5, which raised concerns when the headphone launched. In practice, the difference is inaudible for most music. Both headphones reproduce the full 4 Hz–40,000 Hz range and both support LDAC — Sony's high-resolution Bluetooth codec that transmits up to 990 kbps, roughly three times more data than AAC.
The XM4 retains one advantage here: aptX HD support. If your Android phone transmits aptX HD natively, the XM4 has a theoretical edge. For iPhone users, both headphones top out at AAC over Bluetooth regardless.
Noise Cancellation
The XM5 uses eight microphones versus the XM4's four. In controlled testing, the XM5 suppresses mid-frequency noise — office chatter, airplane engine hum — more effectively. The XM4's ANC is still among the best available and far outperforms non-Sony competitors at the same price.
Transparency mode (called Ambient Sound on Sony headphones) is more natural on the XM5. Voices sound less processed and high-frequency sounds pass through more clearly.
Build and Design
The XM5 is not foldable. This is the most common complaint about the upgrade, and it is legitimate. The XM4 folds flat for packing; the XM5 fits only in a larger carrying case and takes up more bag space. If you travel frequently and pack light, this matters.
Both headphones use the same touch panel on the right ear cup for playback, volume, and ANC controls. Build quality is comparable — Sony's plastic construction is premium-feeling despite not being metal.
Battery Life: A Draw
Both claim 30 hours with ANC active and around 38–40 hours without. In our testing, real-world battery life depends heavily on volume and ANC intensity. At moderate volumes, both easily reach 28–30 hours. Quick Charge delivers 5 hours of playback from 10 minutes of charging on both models.
Comfort Over Long Sessions
The XM5 uses softer ear pad material that many users find more comfortable over multi-hour sessions. The XM4's ear pads are slightly stiffer. Both clamp firmly enough to stay on during movement without causing pressure pain in typical use.
At 250g vs 254g, neither has a meaningful weight advantage.
Who Should Buy the XM4
- You find the XM5 for less than $130 and the XM4 is over $200 (price gap narrows the value case)
- You travel frequently and need a headphone that folds flat
- Your phone supports aptX HD and you listen to hi-res audio locally
Who Should Buy the XM5
- Buying new and the XM5 is priced within $30–40 of the XM4
- You prioritize transparency mode for voice conversations
- You want the latest Bluetooth version and microphone system for calls
Our Recommendation
At current street prices, the WH-1000XM5 at $139–160 is the better buy when purchasing new. The noise cancellation improvement and lighter ear pad experience are real, even if marginal. The WH-1000XM4 at under $150 is the better value if you find it on sale.
Do not upgrade from XM4 to XM5 unless the foldable design frustrated you or you want improved call quality. The sound difference will not be audible in everyday use.
