The GoPro Hero 13 and DJI Osmo Pocket 3 both target the creator who needs stabilized 4K video on the go — but they're completely different tools that solve different problems. The Hero 13 is a rugged action camera designed to be mounted on a helmet, surfboard, or chest harness while you do something physically demanding. The Osmo Pocket 3 is a pocket-sized gimbal camera designed to be handheld for vlogging, travel content, and steady-cam B-roll.
After two weeks of mixed shooting (hiking, biking, vlogging, travel, food review), here's how to know which tool you actually need.
GoPro Hero 13, DJI Osmo Pocket 3, and the head-to-head page.
The fundamental difference
Hero 13 is a rugged box you mount on something. Helmet, handlebars, surfboard, chest harness, drone, dog harness, dashboard. It uses electronic image stabilization (EIS) called HyperSmooth 6.0 — software that crops and corrects shaky footage. It's waterproof to 33ft without housing, drop-rated to 6ft.
Osmo Pocket 3 is a small camera on a mechanical 3-axis gimbal. You hold it in your hand. The gimbal physically smooths motion as you walk. It's not waterproof (case sold separately) and not impact-rated.
If you do something physically demanding while filming: Hero 13. If you film yourself doing things less physically demanding (walking, talking, traveling, cooking): Osmo Pocket 3.
Image quality
Hero 13: 5.3K at 60fps from a 1/1.9-inch sensor. 4K at 120fps for slow motion. 27 MP photos. Solid in good light; noisy in low light (small sensor limitation).
Osmo Pocket 3: 4K at 120fps from a 1-inch sensor. 4K at 60fps with 10-bit color. 9.4 MP photos. Significantly better low-light performance and dynamic range due to larger sensor.
For pure image quality, Osmo Pocket 3 wins decisively — larger sensor + 10-bit color is professional-grade for a pocket camera. For high frame rate slow motion or higher resolution, Hero 13 wins (5.3K vs 4K).
Stabilization
Hero 13 with HyperSmooth 6.0: software EIS. Excellent for rolling motion (biking, running). The "Horizon Lock" feature keeps the horizon level even when the camera rotates 360°. Trade-off: HyperSmooth crops the frame ~10-15% to provide stabilization headroom. Maximum quality (no crop) means less stable footage.
Osmo Pocket 3 with mechanical 3-axis gimbal: physical stabilization, no crop. Smoother than any EIS solution for walking, slow movement, and handheld shooting. Less effective for high-impact movement (running with the gimbal causes some shake).
For vlogging while walking: Osmo Pocket 3 wins. For mounting to a moving object: Hero 13 wins.
Audio
Hero 13: 3 built-in mics with wind noise reduction. Acceptable for action sports content; not great for spoken vlogging. Compatible with DJI Mic 2 (wireless), Rode Wireless Pro, and similar via Media Mod ($79 accessory).
Osmo Pocket 3: 2 built-in mics with stereo recording. Better than Hero 13 for spoken content. Includes DJI Mic 2 receiver built-in — pair a DJI Mic 2 transmitter ($150) and you have wireless lavalier audio with no accessories.
For vlogging with talking, Osmo Pocket 3 wins decisively. For action sports where audio is less critical, Hero 13 is fine.
Battery and shooting time
Hero 13: ~70 minutes of 4K60 recording per charge. Two extra batteries highly recommended for a day of shooting.
Osmo Pocket 3: ~166 minutes of 4K60 recording per charge. Single battery covers most full-day vlogging shoots.
Osmo Pocket 3 wins on shoot time. Hero 13's battery anxiety is real for serious action shooters.
Mounts and accessories ecosystem
GoPro has the most mature accessory ecosystem of any camera category. Helmet mounts, chest harnesses, suction cup mounts, dog harnesses, surfboard mounts, motorcycle mounts, dashboard mounts, dive housings — everything you can imagine. Most are well-made and reasonably priced.
DJI Osmo Pocket 3 has a smaller accessory ecosystem (tripods, extension rods, ND filters, waterproof case) tuned for vlog use. Not designed to mount to action equipment.
If you do action sports, you need GoPro's ecosystem.
Connectivity and workflow
Hero 13: GoPro Quik app for transfer and editing. Wireless transfer is slow (250 MB takes 4-5 minutes). Cloud subscription ($50/yr) for auto-upload.
Osmo Pocket 3: DJI Mimo app for transfer and editing. Wireless transfer is faster. SD card slot for direct camera-to-computer workflow.
Osmo Pocket 3 has the better workflow for content creators who edit on the go.
Price reality
GoPro Hero 13 (creator bundle with battery, mounts, microSD): $449.
DJI Osmo Pocket 3 (Creator Combo with DJI Mic 2 transmitter, extension rod, tripod): $799.
Osmo Pocket 3 is significantly more expensive. Base Pocket 3 (no accessories) is $519; you'll need the Creator Combo for vlogging audio.
Verdict by buyer type
Get the [GoPro Hero](/product/cameras/gopro-hero-13) 13 if: you do action sports (mountain biking, surfing, skiing, motorcycle riding), you need waterproof and impact-rated, you want the largest accessory ecosystem, you shoot 5K or high frame rate slow motion, or you mount cameras to objects rather than holding them.
Get the [DJI Osmo Pocket 3](/product/cameras/dji-osmo-pocket-3) if: you vlog or do travel content while talking, you want professional-grade audio with the wireless DJI Mic 2 integration, you prioritize image quality (1-inch sensor wins), you want the smoothest handheld walking footage, or you shoot indoors or low light frequently.
These aren't really competitors — they're different tools for different content. Many creators own both: GoPro for action B-roll, Osmo Pocket 3 for A-roll talking head.
Color science and post-production workflow
GoPro Hero 13 records in GoPro's proprietary color space with slight saturation boost — colors pop out of the box without editing. The 5.3K codec (HEVC) is efficient for storage but requires GoPro Quik app or Adobe integration for professional editing.
DJI Osmo Pocket 3 records flat color profiles (D-Log optional) that require color grading in post — think cinema camera approach. For creators who shoot log and color-grade, this is preferred. For content creators who need urgency (social media, news, travel vlog), GoPro's out-of-camera saturation is faster to publish.
Gimbal stabilization vs HyperSmooth trade-offs
GoPro's HyperSmooth 6.0 crops the frame internally to stabilize — you get less wide angle when stabilization is active. Maximum stabilization = smallest field of view.
DJI Osmo Pocket 3's mechanical gimbal has zero crop — what you frame is what you get. However, gimbal has limits (fast running motion causes slight vibration that EIS would correct).
For documentary-style walking-speed footage, Osmo Pocket 3's no-crop approach is superior. For action sports with sudden movements, GoPro's HyperSmooth stability advantage outweighs the field-of-view loss.

Lens distortion and cropping
GoPro Hero 13: ultra-wide 155° field of view is standard. Distortion correction is active by default — straight lines may warp. Useful for extreme action, less useful for standard filming.
DJI Osmo Pocket 3: 20mm equivalent prime lens (roughly 38-40° field of view). Minimal distortion. More "normal" framing for vlogging; less exciting for action.
For action sports enthusiasts, GoPro's wide angle is signature. For content creators focused on face-camera talking, Osmo Pocket 3's normal lens is less flattening on face shape.
GoPro: H.265 (HEVC) codec, highly compressed. One 10-minute 4K clip is 2.5-3 GB. Internal storage 128GB (fits ~45 minutes 4K). Expanding to microSD is required for day-long shoots.
DJI Osmo Pocket 3: H.265 codec, similar compression. One 10-minute 4K clip is 2.8-3.2 GB. Internal storage 256GB. Also expandable via microSD.
DJI's double internal storage is practical advantage for travelers who forgot backup card.
These aren't really competitors — they're different tools for different content. Many creators own both: GoPro for action B-roll, Osmo Pocket 3 for A-roll talking head. See our action camera guide and best vlogging camera comparison for more.
